The Worst Time to Visit Hawaii

by | Last updated Aug 17, 2024 | Big Island, Information, Kauai, Maui, Oahu, Trip Planning

Hawaii is an awesome paradise with amazing beaches and exciting culture that brings in tourists year-round. HOWEVER, because so many tourists actively visit Hawaii every day, there are bound to be times when (if possible) it would be better to change when you are traveling there. Whether you want to avoid the crowds, minimize your expenses, or enjoy the best weather conditions, knowing when and where to plan on going is crucial.

THE WEATHER:

rainy

In terms of the weather, Hawaii overall is very rainy and humid. The weather is like this year-round as well so if you do enjoy this type of weather then great! This shouldn’t matter too much. BUT, if you aren’t a fan of these sorts of weather conditions, it can seem very off-putting. Luckily here’s some information for the coldest, hottest, and rainiest months of the Hawaiian Islands.

Oahu:

Hottest Month: August, High: 88°F (31°C)/Low: 70°F (21°C)

Coldest Month: February, High 77°F (25°C)/Low: 62°F (17°C)

Rainiest Month: December (approx. 4 inches)

Maui:

Hottest Month: August, High: 79°F (26°C)/Low: 61°F (16°C)

Coldest Month: January, High: 70°F (21°C)/Low: 55°F (13°C)

Rainiest Month: December (approx. 3 inches)

Kauai:

Coldest Month: January, High: 72°F (22°C)/Low: 54°F (12°C)

Rainiest Month: December (approx. 5 inches)

Hawaii:

Hottest Month: September, High: 86°F (30°C)/Low: 72°F (22°C)

Coldest Month: January, High: 80°F (26°C)/Low: 65°F (18°C)

Rainiest Month: January (approx. 2 inches)

THE CROWDS:

Tourism is a huge part of Hawaii, so huge that there are over 5 times the amount of tourists than the population that lives there! And these are only counting the tourists from the U.S. Hawaii is just a very popular place that people want to visit so it would be a good idea to try to visit during a time when there would be fewer people.

Oahu:

Most Crowded: December ~ January (Christmas and New Years)

Maui:

Most Crowded: Summertime (March ~ August) and December

Kauai:

Most Crowded: December ~ January, July

Hawaii:

Most Crowded: June~ July, December

THE EXPENSES:

Hawaii is just an expensive place to be. Which would make it nice if you could travel during a time when prices are a little cheaper. Generally around the holidays at the end of the year is when the prices are the highest. BUT there are times when you can only travel during the holidays so it’s just better to be prepared and bring some extra cash rather than being unable to do anything.

Oahu:

Most Expensive: December ~ January, July

Maui:

Most Expensive: January and May

Kauai:

Most Expensive: January, July, August

Hawaii:

Most Expensive: July and August

Aloha!
